As first reported on www.nwi.com, Ron Ashlaw, who coached Waukegan and star Jereme Richmond to second- and third-place finishes in the 2009 and 2010 Class 4A state basketball tournaments, will be presented to the District 206 board Monday as Bloom Township's new boys basketball coach.
A source familiar with the hiring process said Ashlaw accepted an offer from Supt. Dr. Lenell Navarre and is expected to receive board approval Monday evening.
Ashlaw replaces Jasper Williams, who won 199 games for the Blazing Trojans in 10 years. In a Bloom basketball history that dates to 1911, that total ranks him third behind Wes Mason (317 victories from 1967 through 1982) and Cecil Sarff (221 victories, 1925-45).
Ashlaw is 205-168 in 13 seasons as a head coach, the last six of those at Waukegan. He went 109-60 at Waukegan, including 26-5 in 2009, when the Bulldogs finished second to Whitney Young in the state tourney, and 27-5 in 2010, when they finished third.
Before that, Ashlaw coached University High in Chicago for three seasons, going 43-46, and St. Benedict from 1999-2002, going 53-61.
