STEVE HANLON: C.P.'s Albrecht opens eyes in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS | Time and time again, the same sentence was repeated on Sunday afternoon at the Hoosier Basketball Magazine's Top 60 workout.

It almost got old. Several people sitting behind my seat at Marian University in Indianapolis followed along with the public address announcer.

"Albrecht gets the assist."

"Albrecht gets the assist."

"Albrecht gets the assist."

In the unofficial tryout for the Indiana All-Star team, Crown Point senior guard Spike Albrecht was a freak show. In the positive sense. He outplayed almost everyone in the gym during his session.

He did what he did this past winter. He raised his game to a level that many didn't believe. While the 6-foot-1 point guard simply amazed.

With all the top-shelf talent in the Duneland Athletic Conference, it was Albrecht who earned the league's MVP honor. And that is no small feat.

"I think I did all right," the humble Albrecht said after Sunday's workout.

All right? Do these fingers need to type "freak show" again?

In one eight-minute scrimmage, Albrecht dished out eight assists with three steals and two buckets. Remember, this was against some of this state's best players.

Albrecht averaged 21 points for the 18-win Bulldogs. He had over five assists and four boards a game.

Yes, there are "better" players in the region than Albrecht. But not one person who laced up their sneakers in the 2010-11 season had a "better" season than Albrecht.

This thought is a no-brainer.

And while Albrecht doesn't fit the mold of a Division I player's stereotype for a body, make no mistake. He will play D-I ball.

Brown, where his older brother Stephen now plays, is very interested in him. Akron has come on strong of late. And Northern Illinois is coming to Merrillville this week to watch the kid play.

"I've had several guys who've made it to the Top 40 (60) workout through the years," said C.P. coach Clint Swan, who coached at the workout. "This was by far the best any one of my guys has played on this stage.

"I don't know if it's possible to play your way on to (the Indiana All-Star) team or not. But if it is I think Spike made a great case for himself today."

In 2002, West Side's Keith Christmas played his way onto the All-Star roster at the Hoosier Basketball showcase. So such a thing is possible.

Munster coach Mike Hackett is this year's head coach. He and his staff and game director Charlie Hall will announce the coveted team on April 14.

They have the toughest job in Indiana. Even more difficult than Larry Bird's with the Pacers. I don't envy what these guys have to do.

But this one thing I know. Spike Albrecht was not in the discussion on Sunday morning. At the very least he is now.

"Whether I make it or not, I don't know," Albrecht said. "Like any player in Indiana I would love to. But I came here to represent myself, my community and my school. Whatever happens, happens."

Yet again, "Albrecht gets the assist."
