STEVE HANLON: Dusting off a boys hoops notebook

All good things must come to an end, a famous philosopher once said. And rightly so, I must add.

Like Steve Martin, I learned just enough philosophy to really screw things up in my head. I really don't care if a tree falls in a forest. Or if anyone hears it. Do you?

As the 2012-13 boys basketball season concluded last Saturday, it's time to hit Philo 101 again and empty out this scribe's hoops notebook. Let's take one last look at the winter that was.

Or was it?

What doesn't kill us makes us stronger: Friedrich Nietzsche said this before going insane. Nietzsche never wore a Bowman Academy Eagles uniform. Maybe this clown knew something though.

Bowman was awful in November and December. Coach Marvin Rea would not accept this. He threw a tree down in the forest and symbolically paddled his Eagles. They responded and were beautiful and nasty in the Class 2A state championship.

I think therefore I am: Rene Descartes said this. Instead he should've said, "I'm getting a new haircut."

This, though, describes the run the Andrean 59ers had. Well done, fellas. The basketball IQ these guys showed in winning their fourth straight sectional and to finally snap the Plymouth curse was phenomenal.

Let's think the unthinkable, let's do the undoable: Douglas Adams said this. So, too, did T.J. Lux. In one of the biggest upsets in my time here along with one of the biggest shots (B.J. Jenkins), Merrillville did the unthinkable in beating Munster in the regional.

Great run, Bucs. Incredible. But I still think Munster was the best team in the region.

Do not go gentle into that good night: Dylan Thomas wrote this. Andrean's final fourth quarter was the opposite of this line. If the ’Niners played Fort Wayne Concordia 100 times, the Cadets would've won one.

They did. A poor fourth quarter opened that door.

Rage, rage against the dying of the light: Another Thomas line describes Bishop Noll's season. The Warriors did just that, giving everything they had against Bowman in the sectional championship.

Matt Sandoval ended his career, but he left it all on the floor. Noll has a great chance to make a run next season. First because they're going to be really good. Second because Bowman will now be 3A.

If we don't succeed, we run the risk of failure: President Clinton said this. Not sure if he was on the top of Mount Olympus or not, but this line represents the basketball players who impressed me when most ignored their effort.

River Forest's Brandon Laas is tough, talented and overlooked. Next year should be even better. The same goes for E.C. Central's Hyron Edwards, West Side's Christian Jacobs, Morton's Rayan Elabed, Calumet's Joshua Borst, Crown Point's Bret Barclay, Gary 21st Century's Dantrell Hurt, Griffith's Murphy twins and Lake Station's Kyle Gooch — underclassmen who impressed me.

Keep up the hard work. If at first you don't succeed, ...

Morgan Twp.'s Ryan Klikus is done, thanks to graduation. But this talented young kid left it all on the floor. You'd get an A-plus if I was your philosophy professor.

Plato said, "Wise men speak because they have something to say; fools because they have to say something.”

OK, I'm done.
