Renaldo Thomas is out as the boys basketball coach at Roosevelt, the school the basketball star played for in the early 1980s.
"He's been released," Roosevelt athletic director A.J. Rodriguez confirmed on Tuesday night. "But I can not make any other comments at this time."
Thomas led Roosevelt to the 1982 state championship game where the Panthers lost 75-74 in double overtime. He then played on Houston's Phi Slama Jama team that lost to North Carolina State in the 1983 NCAA championship game.
In six seasons at Lew Wallace, Thomas went 65-68, but he guided the Hornets to the 2010 Class 3A state championship game, an overtime loss to Washington.
After taking a season off, Thomas returned to his alma mater and went 2-16 last winter. He continually spoke about the future and returning the Panthers to their storied past.
But that now is not possible.
An attempt to reach Thomas on Tuesday night was not successful.
