(Records through Wednesday; last week's rankings in parentheses)
1. Bowman Academy (1) 7-1
The Eagles, after going 2-0 in Detroit last week, head down to Indianapolis for the Ben Davis Shootout to play Lawrence Central and the host Giants.
2. Lake Central (2) 7-1
After making easy work of the DAC West Tournament, Class 4A No. 6 L.C. visits No. 2 Indianapolis Tech tonight. Standing room only is expected for this instant classic. Maybe Matt Meneghetti shoots lights out again?
3. Bishop Noll (3) 6-0
Must be frequent flyer miles for area boys hoops teams right now. Class 2A No. 3 Noll travels to Class 3A No. 4 Brebeuf Jesuit on Saturday. Maybe all the area teams heading south can meet at a Cracker Barrel?
4. 21st Century (NR) 4-1
The off-the-radar Cougars are like a raccoon in a garbage can, they're making noise at night again. Played very well in beating undefeated Chicago Prologue last Saturday. What prolog will they have?
5. Munster (5) 7-3
While not coming back with title, the Mustangs still went 3-1 at the Carroll Shootout last week. Have a week off before a trip to Kankakee Valley on Jan. 11. Gas cards anyone? Home games are fun, too.
6. Lowell (8) 5-1
And speaking of stops at Speedway, the Red Devils are down in Caston for a tournament. No lake-effect snow in the corn belt, so they should be just fine. Opener against Churubusco before several more. Hopefully.
7. Kouts (9) 7-0
The Mustangs made the Hammond Civic Center home on Wednesday night, making quick work of Pioneer at the Region Roundball Rumble. Hosts Lake Station tonight, which should be a better game -- on paper.
8. Griffith (10) 6-1
The Panthers won the Highland Holiday Tournament, besting the hosts 62-43. They host Morton tonight and there will not be a trophy on the line in this one. Just a good young team trying to get better. Working 9-to-5.
9. LaPorte (NR) 7-2
So what do you do when you start the season 1-2? You win your next six games like the Slicers did, culminating in the championship of the DAC East tourney. Enjoy the post-game cupcakes. L.C. on the 10th.
10. Crown Point (7) 4-2
Two things come from the 'Dogs' 71-45 loss to Lake Central in the title game of the DAC West tournament. One is C.P. still has a way to go. Two is L.C. is really, really good. There is time to close the gap. Plenty of it.
On the bubble: Andrean (3-3), Chesterton (4-3), E.C. Central (5-5), Hammond (6-4), Lake Station (3-2), LaPorte (7-2), Lew Wallace (4-1), Marquette (6-2), Michigan City (5-2), Portage (4-3), Roosevelt (5-4), West Side (3-5).
