(Records through Wednesday; last week's rankings in parentheses)
1. Bowman Academy (1) 12-3
The Eagles didn't lose to Carmel because of the free throw disparity, but the Greyhounds certainly didn't need the help. Bowman might not be ready to win 4A state. Then again, it doesn't have to be. Yet.
2. Lake Central (2) 11-2
The Indians escaped Valpo in extra time with their share of the Duneland Athletic Conference lead intact. Barely. Chesterton and Lowell come to town this weekend. Won't be easy.
3. Munster (4) 11-3
Seven in a row for the ponies. Tough back-to-back trips to south Lake County (Lowell) and Porter County (Valpo). Gas up the bus. Will there still be a streak come Saturday night?
4. Lowell (3) 9-1
Seems like the Red Devils haven't played since last year. It's close. Jan. 4 to be exact. Things heat up quickly with Munster at home and Lake Central on the road the first half of a rugged eight-day, four-game gauntlet.
5. Bishop Noll (5) 11-2
The Warriors ran roughshod through the Greater South Shore Conference tournament. Whiting warms up Noll for Michigan City on Saturday. Cream is rising in Class 2A.
6. Griffith (6) 9-2
With Andrean in G-Town tonight and Lowell to follow Tuesday, the Panthers will have to shift out of cruise control as the Northwest Crossroads Conference race cranks up. We'll soon find out what they're made of.
7. Crown Point (NR) 7-3
The Bulldogs put on a clinic at the expense of Chesterton on Saturday. Roadie at LaPorte tonight should be a good one. It starts a stretch of five games in eight days for a team that seems to be finding itself.
8. Chesterton (7) 9-4
The polar vortex took care of Tuesday's game at Mishawaka Marian three days after C.P. chilled out the Trojans. They get their crack at L.C. tonight. Cole Teal back next week? Maybe?
9. LaPorte (8) 9-4
Lake effect snow and sub-zero temps wiped out the Slicers' game with M.C. They'll try to get off the DAC schneid versus surging C.P. before going to Concord. Still much to prove here.
10. Michigan City (10) 8-3
The Wolves had two tilts called off last week courtesy of the Snow Miser. City looks to keep their Duneland slate clean against Portage, then it's off to Noll. Weather permitting, of course.
On the bubble: 21st Century (8-2), Andrean (7-4), Calumet (8-3), E.C. Central (8-5), Hammond (9-6), Hebron (9-3), Kouts (9-2), Lake Station (10-4), Marquette Catholic (8-6), Roosevelt (6-5), Valparaiso (7-6).
