CULVER | Clay Yeo won a sectional title for Triton on Saturday night. The Valparaiso-bound senior scored 32 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the Trojans' 47-46 win against Marquette.
The offense revolves around getting him the ball.
Those in attendance fell into two camps, depending upon which side of the Culver Community gym they sat, as to their feelings of whether or not Yeo played within the rules.
"We had that one taken from us," Marquette coach Donovan Garletts said. "It's just really frustrating when you work your (tails) off all year, and we really did play a pretty good game, and we just came up a couple of free throws short."
Yeo did pick off a pair of key passes in the final minute, including one on the Blazers' final inbounds play with three seconds left to seal the victory for Triton (17-5).
Jasmin Biberovikj hit a pair of free throws to give Marquette a 46-45 lead with 38 seconds left, but was called for a foul on Yeo on the next trip down the floor. Yeo hit both free throws.
"When the game is completely out of your control, it's that much more frustrating," Garletts said. "It's really sad."
The Blazers, ranked No. 8 in Class A, and Triton, ranked No. 10, fought to a 27-27 draw in the first half.
Marquette had four players with two or more fouls at halftime. JoVonte Peals and Biberovikj, both key contributors, sat for long periods. Peals was called for his fourth foul in the third quarter and didn't return until the last three minutes.
"I think we're a 10, 15-point better team than they are. They're a good team and I'm not taking anything away from them, but we're better," Garletts said.
The Blazers (18-6) suffered a 1-point loss to Triton in last year's sectional final, also. Yeo hit the game winner in that game.
