HOBART | In the hall outside Hobart’s gym, amid a bake sale and thumping bass from the guest band upstairs, The Crawpuppies, there was a fundraiser that afforded students the opportunity to throw a pie at the face of select teachers.
It was all in fun but for a serious cause, as the parking lot was filled for the pink-saturated boys-girls basketball doubleheader for Coaches vs. Cancer Night.
Students excitedly ran back into the gym to brag to peers how they muffed Mr. or Mrs. So-and-so.
The game eventually commenced, but not before a moving speech and video on cancer and the loved ones lost by so many.
Behaving with an in-your-face attitude befitting the pies being flung just outside the doors, Times No. 10 Chesterton suffocated Hobart’s pass-happy offense and held the Brickies for more than eight minutes without a point in rolling to a 56-25 victory Tuesday night.
After a Hobart basket in the second quarter cut Chesterton’s lead to 19-12, the Trojans (6-4) went on a 15-0 run to close the half and scored the first four points of the third quarter. A span of 8:05 elapsed on the game clock during Hobart’s drought.
The Brickies (3-8) ate up lots of clock on the offensive end but often without a basket or even a quality look to show for their passing.
Several errant passes went out of bounds, further disrupting the Brickies’ flow.
Elijah Walker had six of his team-high eight points in the first quarter but was denied entry into the post for most of the remainder of the game.
In winning its third consecutive game -- all against potential sectional opponents -- the Trojans certainly filled the scorebook as their lead ballooned to as high as 27.
Chris Palombizio and Corey Rusboldt led Chesterton with 10 points each, but 18 of their combined 20 came in the first half. It was an off night for star Matt Holba (five points, five rebounds, two assists) and leading returning scorer Cole Teal was held without a point.
Nonetheless, Rusboldt had several breakaway layups, and Palombizio was solid underneath to keep the Trojans comfortably ahead before the bench players finished the majority of the fourth period.
Jarrett Colvin had six points and eight rebounds for the Brickies, who did not crack double figures in any single quarter.
