INDIANAPOLIS | So the drive was long and cold. The overnight rest was in a strange bed.
Then, the tipoff for your boys basketball game is at 8:15 a.m. region time. Back home the roosters were still catching some Zzzss.
West Side's JaRe' Glover might want to become a farmer in the future. Early hours don't hold him back.
The 6-foot-4 junior guard opened the first quarter of the Cougars' game against Indianapolis Shortridge with six 3-pointers and earned the game's MVP Award in the IPSAC/Midwest Showcase at Indianapolis Marshall High School on Friday morning.
West Side ran away with a 75-47 win as Glover scored 22 points.
“It felt pretty good,” Glover said, “especially in the first quarter. So far this season my shot's been off. We've worked on that for the past week. Shooting. Shooting. Shooting.”
The Cougars (3-3) shot poorly in each of their games so far. Coach Murray Richards hopes Glover's hot hand will carry over to the entire roster. The stakes will be raised next week when the Gary Holiday Tournament tips off.
“When you go 6-for-6 from the 3 in the first quarter, that gets you going,” Richards said. “We really believe in our defense and it's been pretty good all year. We just weren't shooting very well.”
Shortridge came out of its zone after Glover's fireworks began. That opened the door for several others. Arnold Wilson scored 17 points. Christian Jacobs added 11 and Denzel Casson scored nine in the win.
The game was officiated by three women, which was the first time in IHSAA history that three females referees worked a boys basketball game. Richards said they did a very solid job.
“They missed a few,” Richards said, “but I can say that after every game. It wasn't that bad. I don't look at it like it's male or female. It's whether they're good or bad, and they did a pretty good job.”
