VALPARAISO | The Valparaiso boys golf team proved to be an unwelcoming host Saturday.
The Times No. 1 Vikings, led by Kyle Meihofer's 1-over par round of 73, finished with a team score of 314 to win the Aberdeen Classic for the second consecutive year. The event was played with temperatures in the low 40s and winds gusting at up to 20 miles per hour.
Penn finished second with 325. No. 3 Munster shot a 336 to finish third, a stroke in front of Valparaiso's second varsity squad at 337. No. 4 Lake Central finished fifth at 338.
"I thought 314 in these conditions today was a really good score," Valparaiso coach Wayne Lichtenberger said.
Valparaiso's Logan Bertalan took third with a round of 79, which was matched by Munster's Matt Specht and Penn's JT Schwartz.
On his way to earning medalist honors, Meihofer hit 12 greens in regulation and needed just 29 putts. He made birdies at hole Nos. 7 and 13, and his approach shot on 18 went halfway into the hole before bouncing out. He two-putted from 45 feet to make par.
"Today it was all about keeping the ball low and waiting for opportunities," Meihofer said. "I kept it under the wind really well."
Bertalan recorded birdies at both No. 1 and 13 and made seven pars.
"When I got in trouble, I managed to take a bogey instead of higher scores," he said.
The Vikings also got a round of 80 from Bobby Jacobs, and Andrew Gariup shot 82. Patrick Andrie's round of 80 led Valparaiso's second squad.
"I was really proud of them under difficult conditions," Lichtenberger said. "It was difficult out there today."
Specht's round of 79 paced the Mustangs. He shot a one-over 37 on the front nine. Nikola Tatic added an 81 for Munster.
"I rolled in some pretty big putts and made a couple of birdies," Specht said. "It worked out pretty well."
Lake Central's Mike Barenie and Michigan City's Ryan Brinkman each shot 82.
