Scouting Local Boys Golf Teams
Golfers to watch: Zach Aring, Sr.; Keegan
Short, Sr.; Mike Walsh, Sr.; Jeremy Perkin, Jr.; Billy Dwyer, Jr.;
Michael Barber, Fr.
Outlook: The Bobcats will build upon last
year's 9-3 mark and look to defend their River Valley Conference
title. Aring and Dwyer give new coach David Serafin two solid
returning players to count on throughout the campaign.
Quote: "I believe they will live up to their
goals. It should be an interesting year for us this year." !~
Golfers to watch: Brian Hankey, Sr.; Dan
Morsovillo, Sr.; AJ Flores, Sr.; Caleb Cullom, Jr.; Corey
Outlook: Bloom returns three seniors from last
year's squad that battled to a .500 record. Also back is coach
Carrie Shank, who was off on maternity leave this past season.
Shank feels the seniors are ready to go and if the juniors can
contribute, the Blazing Trojans should see a marked
Quote: "I'm hoping we're a little better than
.500, and I'm hoping we're competing for the conference
championship. Crete-Monee is our big rival there." !~ Shank
Golfers to watch: Miles Bailey, Jr.; Jeremy
Horvath, Sr.; Tyler Christenson, Sr.; Mike Wojotanowski, Sr.; Adam
Outlook: The Warriors return three golfers who
were instrumental in winning the Southland Athletic Conference
title in Bailey, Horvath and Wojotanowski. Crete-Monee also went
12-2 in dual or 3-way meets last year -- with the only losses to
Lincoln-Way North and Illiana Christian -- and should do more of
the same this campaign.
Quote: "We're anticipating strong leadership
from our veteran players, and we have several new golfers; Ken
Caldarazzo, Robert Russell and Brandon Sundeen who will also be
contributors this season." !~ Coach Rob Taylor
Golfers to watch: Kevin Stoffle, Sr.; Jordan
Pounder, Sr.; Logan Lukasic, Sr.; Austin Smith, Jr.
Outlook: The Vikings will look to contend for
conference and regional titles but will have to do it with a
relatively young team. H-F should improve as the season progresses
and looks to match last year's 10-4 record.
Quote: "At tryout, all of our top kids improved
from last year's tryout, and that was nice to see." !~ Coach Chris
Golfer to watch: Jonathan Zandstra, Jr.; Braden
Mulder, Sr.; Kylen Kamp, Sr., Elliott Chapman, Sr.
Outlook: Zandstra is one of the area's top
golfers with a 4 handicap, and coach Jack Rudenga welcomes back
three of his top six players that nearly went downstate. The
Vikings have much potential.
Quote: "We have a good No. 1. If the other guys
can be consistent and the juniors can continue to improve as they
did on the frosh/sophomore team last year, that will give us added
depth." !~ Rudenga
Golfers to watch: Mitch Zavesky, Sr.; Sean Rey,
Sr.; Neil Doyle, So.; Bill Hilger, Sr.; Mike Bush, Sr.
Outlook: The Spartans look to rebound from last
year's 2-11 dual meet record, and they have a solid No. 1 to build
around in Zavesky, who was a sectional qualifier. If Zavesky's
classmates can step up, it could be a rewarding season.
Quote: "Those five are pretty solid. They go
anywhere from 76 to 83 pretty consistently. After that it's a
crapshoot." !~ coach Jim Mendenhall
Golfers to watch: Trent Hayes, Sr.; Ryan
Hernandez, Jr.; Sean McDonnell, Sr.; Collin Papach, Sr.
Outlook: Veteran coach Tom Nicklas likes the
talent of his team, but he said it likely won't crack the Top 10 of
the rugged Chicago Catholic League. He'll also have to find a way
to replace No. 1 golfer Joey Miller, who transferred to Lake
Central. If the Caravan can play to their potential, they'll finish
in the middle of the pack.
Quote: "We are looking for consistency. I am
hoping we can get three or four golfers to break 40." !~
Golfers to watch: Dennis Minefee, Jr.; Paul
Bomba, Sr.; Mark Siedlecki, Sr.; Jorge Macias, Sr.; Ruben Martinez,
Outlook: The Meteors went 7-5 last year, but
none of the returnees has more than a year of experience besides
Minefee. If the other players can elevate their game, North could
stay competitive in the South Suburban Blue Conference.
Quote: "North has qualified multiple golfers
for the sectional tournament two years running. Our goal is to make
it three. Dennis never ceases to amaze coach Rucinski and myself
with his dedication to the game and his work during the summer to
take his game to the next level." !~ Coach Chad Spilde
Golfers to watch: Mike Glasgow, Sr.; Justin
Pasko, Jr.; Jake West, Jr.; Josh Crosby, So.
Outlook: The Rebels have a super young team but
do have a solid No. 1 in Glasgow. If the young players can adapt
quickly to the rigors of the varsity season, T.F. South can battle
for a top 3 or 4 spot in the South Suburban Blue.
Quote: "We‘re going to have to have Mike show a
little leadership for the young golfers. Hopefully, everyone can
get off to a good start, and the momentum can carry over into the
season." !~ Coach Matt Johnson
