CHESTERTON | As the season went on, Lake Central boys golf coach Chris Rossiano told his team to focus on 18-hole golf late in the year and to prepare for the Duneland Athletic Conference, sectional and regional tournaments.
That preparation paid off in a big way on Wednesday.
The Times No. 4 Indians had all five players shoot scores in the 70s, led by TC Cameron’s 73 and Mike Barenie’s 74, in recording a team total of 300 to win the DAC tournament at the Brassie by 10 shots over No. 2 LaPorte.
“These guys want it,” Rossiano said. “They want to get down to state, and they showed that today. We’ve been hanging around the top some tournaments, but this is the first time they clicked.”
No. 5 Crown Point was third, Portage fourth, No. 1 Valparaiso fifth, No. 6 Michigan City sixth, No. 7 Chesterton seventh, and Merrillville was eighth.
LaPorte’s Jordan Lenard carded an even-par round of 72 to claim medalist honors. Teeing off of the 10th hole, Lenard made back-to-back bogeys to start the round, but then birdied holes 18 and 1. He finished with four birdies and four bogeys.
“That two birdie swing really changed the momentum of my game,” Lenard said.
Cameron’s round of 73 was good enough for second. Cameron had a bogey and a double bogey along with a birdie on his first nine, and then he birdied both par-fives on his second nine.
“I left a lot of shots out there,” Cameron said.
Barenie, who finished in a third-place tie with Crown Point’s Pat Mudd, carded his best round of the year. He made one birdie on his first nine and a pair on his second nine. He was diagnosed with a sinus infection on Tuesday night.
“I couldn’t get too excited; I was just trying to keep the ball in play,” Barenie said.
The Indians also got rounds of 76 from Rhet Butler, 77 from Jono Gross and 79 from Matt Meneghetti.
LaPorte’s Joel Collins, Michigan City’s Ryan Brinckman and Portage’s Jordan Henson each recorded rounds of 76.
Bobby Jacobs led Valparaiso by shooting 76. Logan Bertalan added a round of 77.
Portage’s Tyler Gonzalez shot 75, while Noah Kunstek finished with 79.
