CEDAR LAKE | Whenever a team is able to break 300 in an 18-hole round, it’s a significant accomplishment.

Given the pin placement in Saturday’s Lake Central Invitational at Palmira, it’s an even bigger achievement according to Valparaiso coach Wayne Lichtenberger.

The Times No. 1 Vikings were paced by Kyle Meihofer’s medalist score of 69 to end their round at 296 and also capture the team crown.

“This is not an easy course to play,” Lichtenberger said. “The pin placements were really difficult. The kids handled it very well, and I was very happy. They struggled a little bit from time to time, got it back and finished strong.”

In addition to Meihofer’s 69, Bobby Jacobs carded a 73, Andrew Gariup shot a 76 and Logan Bertalan finished with a 78 to round out the Vikings’ scores.

“It was pretty hot, and the course was pretty hard so you were getting big bounces,” said Meihofer, who had four birdies plus an eagle on No. 12. “You just try to pick a spot and try to use the green a little bit more. We’re playing pretty well as a team, and hopefully we can continue that through the postseason.”

Second-place Andrean carded a 314, with No. 3 golfer Garrett Wisniewski leading the way with a 75 — his best-ever score on 18 holes.

Jack Musgrave (78) and Phil Paras (79) also finished strong.

“I’m very happy with it,” Wisniewski said. “We’re in the Valpo Sectional; we got second to them so it gives us confidence going into the playoffs next week. We just finally are hitting our stride, really.”

Wisniewski was pleased with his round, though he felt he could have knocked a few more strokes off it.

“I hit the ball well and I shaped my shots good,” he said. “I think I lipped (out) three or four birdie putts, but I’m happy.”

Lake Central finished third with 317 strokes as TC Cameron led the way with a 75. Munster’s A.J. Gauthier and Matt Specht both carded a 73, but Munster finished fourth with 319 strokes.

“I scrambled well,” Gauthier said. “I didn’t hit that many greens, but I hit a few good putts that kept me alive. Overall, I was really happy with my iron play.”
