LAPORTE | Neither rain, cold nor fog could keep the Valparaiso boys golf team from defending its title Friday.
The Times No. 1 Vikings battled through the elements to post four scores of 80 or better and finish with 310 to win the 77th annual Uebele Invitational at Beechwood Golf Course.
Triton finished second with 314, and No. 4 Crown Point was third with a 316. Number three Lake Central finished fourth (324), No. 6 Portage was fifth (325) and No. 7 Chesterton tied for sixth (329).
Kyle Meihofer led the way for the Vikings with a 75, while Bobby Jacobs added 76.
“All day it was just kind of up and down,” Meihofer said.
Bobby Jacobs added a 76, Andrew Gariup a 79 and Alex Pancek an 80 for Valpo.
“I can’t say enough about the job the kids did going out there and adjusting to everything and playing well,” Valparaiso assistant coach David McGonigle said.
Mike Lee led the Bulldogs with a 75. C.P. got rounds of 77 from Patrick Mudd at the No. 1 spot and Luke Lambert at No. 5.
Marquette’s Jack Clancy posted his best round of the year, shooting a 2-over-par 74 to finish third individually. Triton’s Ryan Rapp won medalist honors with a 72.
Clancy made four birdies on the day. He birdied three of the four par-5s on the course.
“My putting was key and I didn’t make any big numbers,” Clancy said. “I only had one double (bogey).”
Jordan Henson led Portage with a round of 75. Nick Lewis added a 78.
“It was a good round, but it definitely could have been better,” Henson said. “I hit 13 greens and two-putted all of them for par.”
Lake Central’s Matt Meneghetti and Ryan Wells each posted rounds of 78 for the Indians.
Michigan City’s Aaron Skibinski and Chesterton’s Brandon Martin each fired rounds of 78 to lead their respective teams.
