Three varsity sports, school work, an IHSAA Young Ambassador schedule and an internship with Quality Oil: Wheeler senior Drew Heinold has little time to rest his head on a pillow.

He wouldn't have it any other way.

"I'd feel bored if I didn't have as much going on," said Heinold, who's a varsity member in boys tennis, basketball and golf this season. "It might give me more free time, but I always feel I need to do something."

It's spring, so Heinold switches his athletic focus to golf. This is his fourth year on varsity. He's had three sub-90 rounds at sectional. His lowest score was an 81 as a freshman, when he missed the regional by only two strokes.

"On the course, he seems to be in control," Wheeler coach George Topoll said of Heinold. "If he has a problem, he seems to just shake it off, go fix it and go forward."

Heinold understands that he might even play a little better if he kept his focus to just one sport, but that doesn't appear to be in his DNA.

"I really like switching from sport to sport," Heinold said. "I took a year off basketball before, and I really missed it."

Even though he splits his time, he always tries to keep his coaches in the loop.

"He communicates with me all of the time," Topoll said. "He's become a better-rounded individual. He's able to see the big picture -- what life is all about."

Topoll belives Heinold is a true leader, and the senior said he's gained some of those skills in his three years of work as a young ambassador.

"I'm always working with someone new, and it's helped me progress as a leader," Heinold said. "We talk to younger students about principles, and I've learned how to be mentor and a leader. I've become more level-headed."

Heinold's focus is already geared to his career. He plans on majoring in business at Indiana.

"I love the financial world," Heinold said, "and that internship really helps me."

College is a few months away, and Heinold would love to enjoy his final competitive prep season.

"I'm not playing sports in college, and next year is set," he said. "I would really like to go to regional. I'm looking at this year as a chance to finish out my high school career and end on a high point."
