Andrean shuts down Wheeler offense to reach regional final
LAKEVILLE | Andrean scored two goals before halftime and then let its defense do the rest.
The No. 9-ranked 59ers got goals in the 29th and 39th minutes and limited Wheeler to just one shot on goal in a 2-0 win over Wheeler in a Class A regional semifinal Thursday night at Newton Park.
Bethany Christian, the No. 3-ranked team in Class A, defeated Boone Grove 5-0 in the other semifinal.
Andrean (16-3) limited Wheeler's Gavin Voss, who entered the contest with 34 goals on the season, to a single shot on net.
"Those guys in the back, (Dave) Zuccarelli and the rest, did a great job tonight," Andrean coach Pete Reist said.
Connor Gorny opened the scoring when he put a volley off a set piece past Wheeler's David Wozniak from 25 yards out.
"We knew whoever scored first was going to win the game, and they got it," Wheeler coach Ben Elvira.
Mike Gore took a corner kick for the 59ers, and it deflected out of the box to Gorny, who put his shot into the upper corner of the net.
"That was an absolute rocket," Reist said of Gorny's goal.
"It's all about timing," Gorny said. "I worked on that shot over the summer, and when I would hit it as hard as I could, I would usually miss. I just wanted to time it right, and it went in."
Hayden Fogle's 22nd goal of the season made it 2-0 in favor of Andrean with less than two minutes before halftime. Gorny played a through ball to Fogle, whose shot from 20 yards deflected off of the fingertips of Wozniak and into the net.
Voss had a chance to get Wheeler (14-5) within one early in the second half, but his shot from eight yards away went over the crossbar.
Wozniak tallied six saves for the Bearcats.
Five Bruins recorded goals, and they limited Boone Grove to two shots on goal in the win. The Bruins had a 30-5 edge in shots.
"They're a really strong team, and it was tough for us to match up at every position," Boone Grove coach Brian Sherwin said. "Even when they subbed, they stayed strong."
Femi Hollinger-Janzen put Bethany Christian (16-3-1) ahead in the 6th minute when he took a diagonal pass and chipped a shot from eight yards just under the crossbar into the upper corner of the net.
"He is probably the furthest along of any player I've had," Bethany Christian coach Hank Willems said of Hollinger-Janzen. "He's poised on the ball, and he's obviously the engine in the middle."
Caleb Morris added a goal in the 28th minute on a shot from 33 yards out.
Andrew Snyder, Josh Stoltzfus and Isaac Schertz all added goals in a six-minute span in the second half for B.C.
"We didn't attack there for most of the first half, but we attacked much better in the second half," Willems said.
Nathan Miller recorded eight saves for the Wolves (8-9-1).
"As a freshman, I couldn't ask for anything more from him," Sherwin said of Miller. "He showed a real maturity in net."
