PORTER TOWNSHIP | At the start of his team’s sectional semifinal game against Oregon-Davis in the Class A Boone Grove Sectional, the Wolves boys soccer coach Brian Sherwin implored his team to have fewer touches and more shots.
The Times No. 9 Wolves followed their coach’s directive by putting 19 shots on goal in a 9-0 win over the Bobcats on Wednesday.
Boone Grove (12-4) will face Kouts for the sectional championship on Saturday.
The Wolves got out to a fast start by scoring three goals in the first six minutes of the contest.
“We came out well and set the tone for the game,” Sherwin said. ”Sometimes we just don’t do that. (We) come out a little slow and let the other team dictate what’s going on.
"We stepped up right away and decided how this game was going to be played.”
Austin Aguilera opened the scoring in the third minute and added another goal in the sixth when he put a rebound past O-D keeper Aron Rotering.
“Sometimes we forget about the shooting part, and you can’t win soccer games if you don’t shoot,” Sherwin said.
Nick Azevedo scored in the fourth minute, and he added another goal in 18th minute on a run up the middle of the field.
“We distributed the ball well and hit the corners,” Azevedo said. “I was pleased with how everyone did.”
Jake Wright had two goals for Boone Grove, which led 8-0 at halftime, while Shaw Hiestand, Matt Wright and Jacob Chimitt each scored once.
“I was happy with the distribution of the ball,” Sherwin said. “I was happy of the use of our midfielders. All around, it was a really good game.
Rotering made 10 saves for the Bobcats.
Boone Grove totaled a 19-0 edge in shots on goal.
