UNION TOWNSHIP | Wheeler fired off 21 shots on Saturday night and a lot of them found the back of the net.
Cameron Foor scored four times for the Bearcats in a 9-1 rout of Washington Township in the championship of the Class A Wheeler Sectional.
The senior forward’s first goal came less than two minutes into the game and his last came less than four minutes into the second half.
“It’s really a stress relief when we get that first goal,” Foor said. “All the momentum really just boosts off that first goal. My mind was cleared and I just played simple-minded: give-and-goes, through balls, just simple soccer.”
Joey DiSimone scored two goals for the Bearcats, both within minutes of a Foor score. Pablo Balcazar, Ben Moricz and Billy Morgan all scored once.
“Considering that we’re going to be losing (10) seniors next year, that’s a big thing to be able to get some guys some varsity time and some confidence, especially in a sectional championship,” head coach Dave Bock said of Balcazar and Morgan. “The other guys that scored, Joey DiSimone and Ben Moricz, have been phenomenal all year in the midfield.
"I think Ben Moricz has kind of been the unsung hero for us most of the time, because he kind of holds back and is the anchor in front of our defense. He’s been great all year and he deserves just as much credit, so it’s nice for him to get a goal, too.”
Washington Township ended Wheeler’s shutout bid midway through the second half on Robert Hartman’s close-range goal. Bearcats keepers Patrick Berg and Ryan Ruane combined for three saves.
Samuel Cubberly made eight saves for the Senators.
Wheeler will play Andrean in the LaVille Regional on Thursday, the second matchup between the schools this year. Andrean won the first meeting.
“We’re going to prepare (to be) really physical,” Foor said. “When we played them, we gave them a good run but just couldn’t pull it together towards the end. We’re just going to practice really hard and see what we can get out of it.”
