Scouting Local Boys Soccer Teams
BEECHER
Players to watch: Steven Barber, Sr., D; A.J.
Johns, Sr., MF; Nick Giroux, Sr., D; Giozanni Schiavone, Sr., K;
Marshall Langis, So., F.
Outlook: The Bobcats were the River Valley
Conference champions and will look to build of off last season's
success. Beecher is a senior heavy team who will depend on their
senior leadership throughout the year. The Bobcats are strong
defensively but will be forced to find out where their goal scoring
will come from. The Bobcats have advanced to the regional finals
the past two seasons but have been unable to move farther in the
tournament. If Beecher can find their offense, look for the Bobcats
to be serious contenders for a regional title by season's end.
Quote: "I have a good nucleus back at the
starting positions and our group of seniors have a lot of varsity
experience. We graduated a couple of key guys offensively but I
think we're a stronger defense then what we were last year." -
coach Dawn Compton
BLOOM TOWNSHIP
Players to watch: Jorge Garcia, Jr., MF;
Raymundo Munoz, Sr., D; Ramario Gutierrez, Sr., F; Osvaldo Sanchez,
Jr., F; Jose Estrada, Jr., MF.
Outlook: Bloom has the talent and experience to
be one of the stronger teams in the area. Most of the returning
juniors and seniors have plenty of time logged on the pitch so the
time is now for the Blazing Trojans. With a slew of three year
starters look for big things from Bloom in the Southland Athletic
Conference.
Quote: "We're hoping of course to win our
conference and we're hoping to go farther in the tournament then we
did last season. Since we have so many returning starters from last
year, I feel that we're a step ahead of where we were last year." -
coach Kelly Gutierrez.
CRETE-MONEE
Players to watch: Ryan Sadowski, Sr., MF; Matt
Sadowski, Sr., D; Luke Cogan, Sr., D; Carlos Posada, Sr., F; Jake
Cogan, So., MF.
Outlook: Posada is poised to become the
all-time scoring leader in Illinois high school history this season
and the Warriors will need his offense throughout the year. The
Sadowski brothers help solidify the Warriors in the middle back.
Look for Crete-Monee to get some other players going offensively to
help compliment Posada's scoring prowess. The Warriors were knocked
out of last season's Andrew Regional by a very solid Stagg team who
reached the Normal Super-Sectional and if the Warriors can find
some offensive help for Posada, look for a standout season from the
Crete-Monee team.
Quote: "We're looking for some hardware this
year. A regional championship, a sectional championship. Last year
we were 17-4 but this year we want to take that to a whole other
level." - coach Julian Lagunas.
HOMEWOOD-FLOSSMOOR
Players to watch: Mike Hurley, Sr., MF; Jairo
Garcia, Sr., D; Allen Sanchez, Sr., MF; Alfredo Ferreira, Jr., D;
Chris Vendrey, Sr., F.
Outlook: The Vikings will be forced to play
without standout junior goalie Phil Huang who is recovering from a
broken hand. The Vikings lost eight seniors from last season and a
lot of playing experience will be lost with them. Coach Charlie
Ward's players have come to practice hungry and ready to battle for
valuable playing time. Jairo Garcia is Homewood-Flossmoor's best
player and his transition from forward to mid-field to defense
shows the team first type of players that Ward is working with.
Quote: "We're not the biggest team in the
conference but we're a collection of skill players. Our foot skill
and our possession should be pretty solid this year. We have a
group of committed players and they're very hungry to prove
themselves on the field." - Ward.
ILLIANA CHRISTIAN
Players to watch: Mark Vanderzee, Sr., MF; Nick
Fiene, Fr., MF; Isaac Lindahl, Sr., K; Joe Ooms, Sr., F.
Outlook: The biggest news for the Vikings in
2011 is the team's move to class 1A. Looking to improve on a 9-11-2
record in 2010, Illiana Christian will be forced to make its gains
with a tightened roster. With only seventeen players dressing, the
Vikings will look for their seven seniors to step up and carry both
the offense and the defense. Freshman Fiene will be someone to keep
an eye on. Fiene will be the starting center mid-fielder for the
Vikings where he should remain for the foreseeable future.
Quote: "It is a building year but we've got
some good returning seniors. This is one of the best overall ball
control teams I have ever had. They have speed of play and the
ability to control the ball. We're getting into a new style of
soccer this year then we're really used to." - coach Chip
Bevan.
ILLINOIS LUTHERAN
Players to watch: Justin Clayton, Jr., D; Jared
Wallace, Jr., F; Eric Dorn, Jr., MF; Collin Borns, So., MF; Jacob
Heyn, So., K.
Outlook: Illinois Lutheran lost in last
season's regional finals and are coming off of a 14-7-1 season in
2010. This will be a rebuilding season for a young team and it
should be a bumpy ride for the team early on as their freshman and
sophomore are forced to play at the varsity level early. Look for
Illinois Lutheran to improve its skills throughout the season as
they look to the future for greater successes.
Quote: "I think over the long haul, by the end
of this season and going into next season we should be pretty
solid." - coach Andy Biesterfeld
LUTHER EAST
Players to watch: Chi Anokwute, So., D; Joe
Ferguson, Jr., MF/K; Ben Fluga, So., D; Zach Craig, Fr., MF; Katie
Becker, Sr., F.
Outlook: Luther East is returning to the field
this season and their special exemption from the state allows them
to field on of the few co-ed teams in Illinois. Coach Steve
Ferguson is happy with the way his speed is developing in the
mid-field and the versatility at that position should give Luther
East a chance to be competitive. Once the team has their feet under
them, look for this program make a name for itself in the South
Shore Christian Conference.
Quote: "We're just looking to come together and
make a push in the conference and to let teams know that Luther
East is back in the conference and we're not going to take our
first year easy." Ferguson
MARIAN CATHOLIC
Players to watch: Moe Giglio, Sr., D; Joe
Saenz, Sr., D; Nick Corollo, Sr., D; Kyle Cayton, Sr., D; Zach
Henry, Sr., MF.
Outlook: The Spartans are looking to improve on
2011's record of 5-17-2. Marian Catholic is returning the majority
of their starters from 2010 and should be able to improve on last
year's dismal season. Coach Nasser Shahtaji is hoping his talent at
the freshman and sophomore level is able to mesh with his returning
starters from last year.
Quote: "To have a good chemisty, that would be
the key factor for us having a good team this year. That's going to
be the challenge for us. That's going to be the biggest if." -
Shahtaji.
MOUNT CARMEL
Players to watch: Angel Dieguez, Sr., MF; Colin
Marz, Sr., MF; Perro Mendieta, Sr., D; Matthew Kielman, Sr., D;
Daniel Hayes, So., F.
Outlook: With eleven seniors on the roster, the
Caravan will be a senior dominated team that will be looking
towards those seniors to lead the way. Mount Carmel went through a
rough season in 2010, finishing the season at 4-15, and new coach
Tom Schergen hopes his seniors will use last season as a learning
experience for the upcoming 2011 season. Mount Carmel will be
starting a freshman forward and sophomore Daniel Hayes, a Loyola
transfer, should help the Caravan turn around the program's
fortunes in the future.
Quote: "We have a lot of talent. We're real confident that we're
going to have a very good year. When you're working with a lot of
seniors, it's a coach's dream." - Schergen.
ST. FRANCIS DE SALES
Outlook: The ability to field a full team will
be a major obstacle for St. Francis de Sales in 2011. New coach
George Sanchez is optimistic that the team will play this
season.
THORNTON FRACTIONAL
Players to watch: Ray Kobus, So., F; Adam
Sarih, Sr., MF; Dominic Sulli, Sr., K; Jeyson Solis, Jr., D; Ivan
Trejo, Jr., MF.
Outlook: Thornton Fractional lost a lot of
talent from last season and will be looking at new players to fill
new positions in 2011. This will be a transition year for the team
and any success they enjoy will be a direct result of the players
ability to learn to play at the varsity level.
Quote: "We hope to be conditioned, disciplined,
and play great defense. If we can do that hopefully we can win a
few games." - coach Alejandro Lagunas.
THORNTON TOWNSHIP
Players to watch: Roy Vargas, Sr., D; Luis
Mata, Jr., D; Aaron Zambrano, Sr., F; Jose Zambrano, Jr., MF;
Emmanuel Barjebo, So., F; Alex Ayala, Jr., MF.
Outlook: The Wildcats on lost four seniors from
last season and should be a team that is on the rise in the
Southwest Suburban Conference. The Wilcats finished the 2010
campaign with a .500 record and will look to be on the winning side
of the ball more in 2011.
Quote: "We're on the upswing. We have a very
good sophomore level also. The program is looking like it's going
in the right direction." - coach David Gonzalez.
WASHINGTON
Players to watch: Misael Martinez, Sr., F;
Edgar Torrez, Sr., K; Jaime Prado, Sr., K; Gabriel Martinez, Jr.,
MF/F; Sergio Frasco, Sr., D.
Outlook: Washington made it to the sectional
semifinals in 2010 and are returning one of the strongest teams in
the Chicago area. The Minutemen have been asked to participate in
the Pepsi Showdown tournament and the invite helps to validate the
status of this team. Washington is poised to make a run deep into
the tournament, and Misael Maritnez will be the key factor to the
successes of the team.
Quote: "We have high expectations. We should be
contenders in both the city league and in the IHSA. Our goal is to
get back to the final of the Chicago Public League and as far as
the IHSA, we're looking to go for the sectional if nothing else.
We've been there a couple times and we know what it's like. They
don't want to just go play in the sectional, they want to win it."
- coach Al Perez
