HAMMOND | After the girls had done it a few hours earlier, the Hammond boys team delivered a Great Lakes Athletic Conference championship, too.
The Wildcats beat conference and city rival Morton 6-1.
Eduardo Navarro got things started at 9:59 with the match's first goal. About five minutes later, Navarro was awarded a penalty kick after a Governor foul inside the box. His shot bounced hard off the crossbar.
Hairon Sosa picked up his Wildcat teammate 37 seconds after that kick, though, with a goal that made it 2-0 Hammond.
Hammond controlled the ball for most of the game and kept it in Governor territory. Several Wildcat shots missed over and around the goal.
In the second half, Navarro got his second goal at 47:35 and it was 3-0.
At 57:56, there was a stoppage in play because Hammond fans were taunting Morton keeper Rudy Grasha. Hammond was given a yellow card.
Almost as soon as play resumed, Eliseo Hernandez took a shot from nearly parallel with the back line on the left side that ricocheted off of Grasha's hands and into the net.
Sosa scored again with just over six minutes left. Hammond got its final goal from from Abel Garcia barely one minute later.
At 4:41, Morton picked up a score.
Grasha finished with 10 saves.
