MICHIGAN CITY | All of Lake Central's offensive pressure finally paid off against Michigan City.
The Times No. 1 Indians scored three goals in the final 22 minutes to pull away and beat the No. 7 Wolves 3-0 in a Duneland Athletic Conference boys soccer match Wednesday.
"We were pretty comfortable at half with the 15 shots that we had, Lake Central coach Jereme Rainwater said. "If we continued to get good opportunities, we might put one away."
Lake Central (5-0, 2-0 Duneland) outshot Michigan City 37-5 and had a 16-2 edge in shots on goal.
Kyle Uzubell started the scoring in the 49th minute when he chipped a shot from just in front of the end line. His shot deflected off Michigan City's Jimmy Rubino IV and past keeper Lane Van Sickle.
"Kyle did an outstanding job to get around the corner there," Rainwater said. "It just goes back to the fact that at that time I think we had 22 shots or something. You're bound to put one of those in.
"(Uzubell) got around two guys and it bounced off the toe of the defender and changed directions on the keeper," Michigan City coach Bruce Stahl added. "That changed the game."
Ethan Donovan tallied two goals. The first came on a penalty kick a little more than a minute after Uzubell's goal. Kawalec then put away a cross off of a corner kick to make it 3-0 with four minutes remaining.
Van Sickle made 14 saves for the Wolves, while Joey Machrovich made two saves for Lake Central. He combined with John Hearne to get the shutout.
The Indians had nine corner kicks, including seven in the second half, while the Wolves (2-3, 0-2) had two. Each team had 15 fouls.
"We had better looks that we missed on," Rainwater said. "Eventually one of those might fall for you, and when they did, it kind of opened up the doors a little bit."
