CROWN POINT | Crown Point and Lake Central played one of the most exciting and toughest tennis matches of the year in Thursday's sectional semifinals.
But they didn't get to finish.
A power outage through Crown Point stopped the match at 8:20 p.m. The power outage followed delays by lightning rain that had stopped play for more than an hour.
The Indians led 1-0 a t the time play was halted on a win at No. 1 singles by Thomas Lozanoski. But that's only part of the story.
All of the other matches were in the third set. Lake Central was up in two of the third sets, with the Bulldogs leading in the other two. It couldn't get any closer.
"It's a shame that we have to keep halting play," Bulldogs coach Chris Korzeniewski said. "The kids are playing their hearts out, and keep getting stopped by the weather."
Lake Central coach Eric Stark concurred.
"It's hard for kids to keep getting psyched up when they keep stopping like this," Stark said. "It takes a lot of fortitude to be able to pick it back up."
The two teams will square off at 4:15 p.m. today. The winner will face Lowell, which defeated Rensselaer, 4-1, to advance.
"We played very well today," Red Devils coach Dustin Hudak said. "We've been getting better as the year progresses. Hopefully we will peak tomorrow."
