HIGHLAND | Seth Peters and Matty Hodges thought their serves had needed some work lately.
After the Trojan pair's match in Wednesday's Highland Sectional, in which they combined for six aces, it's easy to see they've corrected the problem.
"We were serving really well today, just in general," said Peters, who had four of those aces.
In the end, Highland's first doubles team cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win over the counterparts from Griffith. The Trojans took four of five matches from the Panthers overall.
"We've had a lot of close matches this season, but overall we're just having a good time," Highland No. 2 singles player Tyler Juranovich said.
Juranovich won his match over James Steinhubel 6-4, 6-0, despite what he called a slow start.
"We probably play Crown Point in the first round of the regional," Juranovich said. "If I start out like that again, it could be bad news."
Griffith's only win came from No. 1 singles player Garrett Litke in what was perhaps the most exciting match of the day. Litke won 6-4, 6-4 over Danny Morgan, but it took more than 20 minutes to win the final point.
On the other side, Calumet only allowed West Side a single point en route to a 5-0 win.
At No. 1 singles, Jeff Stooksbury made quick work of Dontaye Bates 6-0, 6-0 behind what he called his best serve of the season.
"I went in there with a game plan, and it worked out for me," Stooksbury said. "It was just consistency, basically. I just tried to make him make mistakes."
The Warriors will meet Highland in the sectional final at 4 p.m. today at Highland.
Stooksbury said he's excited about the way his team is playing at the moment.
"We played really well," he said. "It's been a long time since we've won the sectional. It would be amazing."
