MICHIGAN CITY | The strong postseason run of Merrillville’s No. 1 doubles team came to an end Saturday morning in the 23rd Annual Doubles State Tournament.

The team of Ronaldo Mayersky and Alexander Swiercz lost their match to Concord’s Grant Cunningham and Trevor Warren 6-1, 6-2.

Mayersky and Swiercz had earned their way to the regional by virtue of sectional wins over River Forest, Andrean and Hobart.

“They had a nice postseason run up until today,” Pirates coach James Simon said. “They had been playing better tennis as the season progressed. The improvement showed up in the sectional matches.”

Saturday was a different story.

“Unfortunately, we had a lot of unforced errors today,” Simon said. “We played with the same intensity and aggression that we have been displaying, but our execution didn’t match up.”

The Concord tandem played a strong net game that forced Mayersky and Swiercz to play back farther than they wanted to.

“Concord took a lot of net points today,” Simon said. “They had a good game plan and executed it well.”

Mayersky and Swiercz finished the season with a record of 8-17. Swiercz and his twin brother, Jacob, will graduate. The other five starting Merrillville varsity players will return for next season, providing optimism for the program.

“With five returning experienced players we should be in pretty good shape,” Simon said. “We also plan to do some spring recruiting. We want to increase our numbers and get some quantity to go with our quality.”

The Pirates No. 1 doubles team was the last Northwest Indiana representative in the state tournament.
