HEBRON | Trey Biggs will be going into his third year as the starting setter for Hebron’s boys volleyball team.

Even though setter wasn’t his first choice, he’s grown into the position and become one of the team leaders.

“I actually wanted to hit, but we needed a setter my sophomore year," Biggs said. "Coach (Kelly) Dickensheets said I should do it, and I like it now.

“I already knew how to play the position, but it took a while to get used to it.”

Said his coach: “I told Trey that he’ll be more valuable to the team as a setter rather than a hitter. I had to sell him on it, though. I told him that the setter rarely leaves the court, and that he has his hands on every other ball.

"He’s really learned to embrace it.”

Biggs, along with seniors Ryan Patz, Austin Wayne and Spencer Sheets, have helped Hebron to two straight undefeated seasons.

In fact, Patz, Wayne and Sheets have never lost a game in high school, including middle school and a few junior varsity games, and Biggs has only lost one game.

“There’s some pressure from the guys who graduated,” Biggs said. “But they told us just to go out there and play every game hard, because they miss the game now.”

Dickensheets said the team has discussed its undefeated seasons, but added that it isn’t something she talks about before every match.

Many of the players go to each other’s homes on weekends to practice and learn communication skills on the court. The team’s closeness, along with Biggs’ ability to keep the ball in play, have been keys to their success.

“I like setting the ball for other players and seeing where the ball is going to go,” Biggs said.

“Trey’s always had good hands and good decision making skills,” Dickensheets said. “He’s like a quarterback on a football team, or a point guard on a basketball team.

"The setter runs the show.”

Biggs’ ability to set also earns praise from teammates.

Junior Jay Fieser called Biggs “the best setter” and said he doesn’t like playing for club teams in the offseason because he’s so used to getting perfect sets from Biggs.

“I’m so used to Trey’s sets that I can hit the ball really good,” Spencer Sheets added. “He never lets you down, whether it’s a good pass or bad pass, it’s right there all the time.”
