UNION TOWNSHIP | Andrean made sure history did not repeat itself against Wheeler in the Class 2A sectional opener Friday night.

After last season’s upset loss to the Bearcats, the state No. 4 59ers scored on all nine first-half possessions and finished with 476 yards of total offense in a 63-13 rout.

Andrean will host Boone Grove in next week’s Section 25 semifinals. The 59ers have won five straight games since a loss to Hobart.

The 59ers churned out 434 yards on the ground and needed just 34 yards through the air.

“Our kids played well,” said Andrean coach Phil Mason. “The offensive line executed up front. Matt (DeSomer) executed everything. Every kid who touched the ball did what they were supposed to do. We emphasized that all week.”

Quarterback Matt DeSomer rushed for 216 yards and three scores to lead the 59er offense. He started the scoring on a 52-yard option keeper on the third play from scrimmage and later added scoring runs of 71 and 49 yards.

“It opened up, so I had to take it,” DeSomer said of his first touchdown.

Andrean (8-2) was efficient on offense, with no scoring drive lasting longer than seven plays and six of those needing three plays or fewer.

Five different Andrean players found the end zone. Trevor Berg matched DeSomer’s effort with three scores from seven, three and 28 yards out. He finished with 119 yards rushing on 10 carries.

“We have a lot of threats,” DeSomer said. “Instead of just one person, we can trust anybody to score for us.”

Andrean scored four touchdowns in the first quarter and five in the second to lead 63-0 at halftime.

Donovan Chandler took a jet sweep 57 yards for a score. Zack Kogut scored on a one-yard run on his only carry, and Shamir Johnson had a one-yard score.

The 59ers had 442 yards rushing as a team on 32 carries.

“We emphasized let’s keep it going, let’s stay consistent on offense especially early on in the game,” Mason said.

Wheeler quarterback Jeremy Truchan was 6-of-20 on pass attempts for 118 yards. He was intercepted twice and had a 75-yard touchdown pass to Derek Hartwig.

Andrean outgained Wheeler 468-77 in the first half.

“Sometimes when you anger a big, physical team who’s very talented and executes, things like this can happen,” Wheeler coach Tony Klimczak said.

Hartwig totaled 133 yards of total offense for Wheeler (6-4).
