MERRILLVILLE | Matt DeSomer turned the ball over three times on Times No. 1 Andrean's first three drives Friday at Father Eckert Stadium.
That led to 14 West Side points before DeSomer and the 59ers answered with 36 unanswered points en route to a 65-28 win over the Cougars.
The senior quarterback finished with 222 total yards and three touchdowns, despite only playing one series in the second half.
The Cougars (0-3) marched 78 yards on the opening drive in a little under two minutes with no huddles. Berrie Wesby punched it in from three yards out. After a failed conversion attempt, West Side led 6-0.
DeSomer's turned the ball over twice more on the next two drives, and the Cougars cashed in the second time.
Ramone Atkins hit JonVea' Johnson with a 55-yard touchdown pass. After the conversion, West Side was in control 14-0.
DeSomer came right back, though, with a 48-yard scoring run of his own.
Andrean (3-0), ranked No. 1 in the 3A state coaches poll, forced a three and out and then took it right back down the field with a several runs right up the gut. Cameron Bosak had 27 yards on three carries on the drive, including the seven-yard touchdown that --after the point after-- tied the game at 14-14.
Trevor Berg scored on a four-yard run on the first play of the second quarter, and the 59ers were off and running. Berg would have one more before his day was done.
Tylor Petkovich's 43-yard fumble recovery for a score only 10 seconds into the second half all but sealed the deal.
JonVea Johnson had six catches for 161 yards and two scores for West Side. Lonnie Johnson caught six passes for 77 yards. Quarterback Ramone Atkins passed for 324 yards and two scores.
