Anthony Standifer stood in line Thursday waiting for his physical for the inaugural Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl, but he said he didn't feel like he was enlisting in the Marines.
He was excited about the chance to play in the 5 p.m. game today at Phoenix's Chase Field. The Crete-Monee senior defensive back, who will play for the West squad, is one of 100 top prep players chosen to play in the game.
One thing did remind him of the armed forces.
"We got our uniforms, helmets (Thursday) and it is really cool," Standifer said. "All new and top-notch."
Also selected was Mount Carmel's Vontrell Williams, an Illinois recruit. He will not be able to play because of an ankle injury suffered in the Catholic League playoffs.
Standifer knows a lot of college scouts will be in the stands, but he said he will just play his game and not try to show off. He is looking for a college as he recently decommitted from Michigan. Standifer said Michigan was just not a good fit for him and that he has a recruiting visit to Nebraska in the next week.
"I want to play my best and also have fun," Standifer said. "There are a lot of great players here and I just want to play hard.
"It is really a thrill and honor to be chosen to play in this game. I am going to meet a lot of great guys and I think it will be a great experience overall."
Warriors coach Jerry Verde said this is a good chance for college scouts to see Standifer and he will be tested.
"This is great competition and I just think the experience for Anthony will be a great one," Verde said. "I think he will play well."
