Culver Academies scored on an 80-yard punt return with 26 seconds remaining Friday night to edge Boone Grove 23-17 at Valparaiso High School.
Wolves quarterback Aaron Ellis scored from 10 yards out in the third quarter to give his team a 17-14 lead. Ellis connected with Niko Kilburg for a 41-yard scoring play in the second quarter. Andrew Ooms added a 26 yard field goal.
Ellis finished 11-of-18 for 169 yards and a TD. Evan Stewart rushed 30 times for 133 yards.
"That was very tough," Boone Grove coach Tony Tinkel said. "They held their heads up. We played hard from whistle to whistle. I'm really proud of them."
LaPorte 48, Michigan City 21: Charles Salary scored five touchdowns and ran for a school-record 353 yards in the Duneland Athletic Conference win for the Slicers.
Clark 47, Roosevelt 12: Maurice Dawkins scored three touchdowns to lead the Pioneers past the Panthers.
Dawkins rushed 10- times for 143 yards and two scores. His TDs were from 44 and 24 yards. He also caught a 5-yard scoring pass from Justin Martinez. Martinez added a pair of 4-yard scoring runs; Anthony Baucom had a 77-yard kickoff return and Rodney Baggett recovered a fumble in the end zone for another score.
Lafayette Central Catholic 28, Rensselaer 27: Quarterback Ty Preston hit Luke Schreder on a 12-yard scoring pass with a minute remaining in regulation, leading the Knights past the Bombers in Hoosier Conference action.
On the previous possession, Rensselaer took a 27-21 lead on Rylan Arihood's second touchdown of the game. Arihood led the Bombers (6-2. 3-2) with 78 yards on 19 carries.
But Preston, who was 19-of-36 passing for 221 yards and three TDs -- Preston was also 3-of-3 in PAT kicks -- led Lafayette Central Catholic (7-1, 5-0) in its winning drive with a little less than 2:30 left in regulation.
Defensively, the Bombers were led by Dalton Murphy, who was credited with 12 tackles, and Beau Boswell, who opened the scoring by recovering a blocked punt in the end zone.
