HAMMOND | After a uneventful first half offensively for Morton, the Governors turned up the intensity after the break.
Holding just a 7-0 lead at halftime, the Governors rode the coattails of Eleazar Henderson, and the senior running back produced 17 carries for 97 yards and two touchdowns, giving Morton a 35-20 win over West Side.
After West Side (3-4) fielded an onside kick attempt from Morton to open up the second half, Lonnie Johnson took a handoff 57 yards, breaking a tackle to cut Morton’s lead 7-6 after the extra point attempt was blocked.
Henderson fired back for Morton (3-4), hitting pay dirt on a 10-yard run to give the Governors a 14-6 lead with 9:29 left in the third quarter.
After West Side turned it over on downs, Morton’s Jimmy Glidewell snuck in the end zone for a 1-yard touchdown, giving the Governors a 21-6 lead with 5:10 left in the third quarter. On that drive, Morton’s Torey Armstrong bolted down the left sideline for a 54-yard run, before finally being brought down at West Side’s 10-yard line.

Henderson fired back with a 44-yard touchdown to give the Governors a 28-14 lead on their next possession.
Neither team could get much offense going during a very defensive-minded first half. Morton’s Devon Mingo found himself in the right place at the right time, as an errant pass from Atkins landed in Mingo’s hands. Mingo then sprinted down the right sideline for a 33-yard touchdown, giving the Governors a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter that they would hold at halftime.
Johnson led all rushers with 37 yards in the first half, including runs of 14 and 21 yards. Johnson also picked off a pass in the end zone to prevent a Morton touchdown in the second quarter.
Johnson would end with 131 yards on 15 carries for West Side.
