Hanover Central athletic director Jeff Brooks will make a couple of phone calls this morning, to Whiting's Paul Laub and Wheeler's Randy Stelter.

What Brooks tells them will make all in the Greater South Shore Conference very happy.

By a 4-0 vote Tuesday, the Hanover Community School Corporation's school board voted to affirm Brooks' desire to move the start of varsity football up one year to 2014.

"It went great," Brooks said. "We had a middle school game (Tuesday night) and we went and told the players and their parents and there was a lot of excitement.

"We're starting varsity football in 2014."

The Wildcats will have a junior varsity schedule next fall, a varsity regular season in 2014 and in 2015, Hanover will be a Class 3A member of the IHSAA state football tournament.

Starting a year earlier will allow schools in the GSSC to have a full conference schedule for two years, instead of just one.

Had the Wildcats waited until 2015, like first planned, the conference they join next school year would've had to sign one-year contracts for the 2014 season, which would've been a nightmare.

More equipment will need to be purchased and the board discussed a 5-year facility project, which will include bleachers and a press box.

"This is exciting for Boone Grove, too," Brooks said. "They only have to be an independent for one more year. I think everyone in town, the parents and kids, are really excited. We're already making plans for our first game."
