JIM PETERS: What to watch for in the prep football season

It starts tonight.

If you need to ask what, then you're not a high school football fan.

For those of you on board whose anticipation is anywhere close to  mine, you're looking forward to all of the story lines that are about to be penned over the coming weeks and months.

In no particular order, here's some angles I'm looking forward to following:

Will the E.C. Central revival continue? They certainly have the star power, but after falling flat in the sectional against Morton, work remains to be done. They need to be closer than 43 points to Lake Central in week two or the gaudy record will be a little shallow.

Kankakee Valley, same question. The Kougars ended on a down note last year, too, but you have to love what Brad Stewart's doing down in Wheatfield. It will be a great game tonight in Rensselaer.

How many yards will West Side throw for? I'm putting the over-under for the regular season at 2,700. That said, they will also play the longest games so bring thicker seat cushions.

Who's the best team in 6A? Merrillville has been the last big school standing in four of the last six seasons. They graduated plenty of weapons, but the talent pool is still deep. Sophomore quarterback DJ Wilkins will be exhilarating and exasperating, sometimes in the same series of downs.

How many points will Lake Central allow? It slipped a little after week five last year, but all signs point to dominance with Gelen Robinson and C.J. Lessentine. Coach Brett St. Germain just hopes it doesn't take pitching a shutout in order to win, given some offensive question marks.

How will Mark Peterson do at Chesterton? When he got the job at Portage, some questioned his ability to coach at a big school. After three up-and-down seasons there, the skeptics remain.

Will there be a revival at Lowell and Griffith? The traditional 4A strongholds have slipped from their perch in recent years. A glimpse of the Panthers in the scrimmage suggests things are looking up in the Boneyard. Get used to hearing the name Justin Green.

Can Whiting break through in Class A? With Lafayette Central Catholic out of the picture, the road to Indianapolis is open, but the Oilers have to figure out how to deal with West Central first. If not Whiting, watch out for South Central. Dan Klimczak is settled in as the coach in Union Mills and we know what he did at Wheeler.

Can Boone Grove sustain success? They turned a corner last season but will have to try to keep the momentum going with almost all new skill players.

Will Morton win a fifth straight sectional in 4A? The Govs were knocked down, but not out last season, coming through when it counted. There are lots of contenders to the throne.

At Mishawaka, at Penn, at Lake Central, at Merrillville. What will Portage coach Wally McCormack's disposition be in four weeks after running that gauntlet? He didn't make the schedule. He just has to play it.

K.V. and Boone both improved by six wins last year, Hobart by five. Who's going to make this year's leap? Munster (2-8) and Griffith (3-6) seem to be solid candidates.

How good is Matt DeSomer going to be? The Andrean QB would be the No. 1 pick in high school fantasy drafts, if there were such a thing. He'd go pretty high in a baseball draft, too.

Certainly not a cumulative list, but there's a good start.

Enjoy.
