Everybody's All-American

Matt Ramirez, Jr., QB. After playing wide receiver for the last two seasons, the junior will take his shot at running an offense. The last two Ramirez brothers — Mario and Marcus — have great success at wide receiver and running back and the youngest will play the role his oldest brother, Mike, used to play 13 years ago. Clark coach Jay Novak will use him in a variety of roles at the quarterback position because of his athleticism. “He has all the tools,” Novak said. “He can run it, throw it, is one of the fastest kids on the team, has a lot of football savvy, and will develop into a good passing QB.”

He's got next

The entire sophomore class. Novak insisted that this class will have a big impact on what happens this year. According to Novak, there are a bunch of athletes in this class like RB Maurice Dawkins, WR Travonte Wallace and WR Rodney Bagget. “They will all play a big role and will be pretty effective on the field,” he said. “If they stay together, they will be really good in a couple years. They all just have to get reps on the football field.”

The Times' breakdown

After a 3-1 start last year that included a 13-6 win against Whiting in the season opener, the season fell apart for Clark. It lost its last six by a total score of 249-72, including a 63-7 loss to Griffith in its Class 4A Sectional 9 opener. Now under former Whiting and E.C. Central assistant Jay Novak, the Pioneers will return to more of a high-flying offense. Matt Ramirez will enter the opener as the unquestioned starter at QB and with some different targets to throw to. Senior Anton Mayfield and sophomores Travonte Wallace and Rodney Bagget are all speedy, athletic targets who will take the majority of the looks on the outside while Ramirez will have a familiar face in the backfield in senior tailback Eugene Walls. Besides the chemistry factor, the two biggest question marks will be on both lines, as Clark lost its two anchors in Enrique Zamora and Matt Yates. One of the only holdovers from last year’s offensive and defensive lines is senior Kris Barrera. “There was a bad taste in the kids’ mouths from last year, so we don’t talk about, care about or think about last year at all,” Novak said. “We’re just going to learn from it. These kids aren’t proven, but they’re hungry as heck and I’m really pumped because we’re going to be doing some different things around here.” — Paul Honeycutt
