The Times' breakdown
During summer workouts, assistant coaches Dan Mora and Ron Lewis said this is the most players a Lake Station football team has seen in recent memory. That bodes well for a team that struggled to build interest in the program in recent years, including ending last season with 17 players. With numbers in the 30s so far, having a full junior varsity season is one of the biggest goals. "I talked to a lot of (kids). I have a really good rapport with the kids in the school. I'm the head track coach, too, so we have a lot of good turnover," head coach Lunsford said. A pretty good core is back from last season. Kyle Gooch will remain the workhorse running back for the Eagles, who haven't mustered a winning season since 1998, also the last time the team won a sectional championship. "I feel the kids want to play, and it's showing. They're coming out and working hard," Lunsford said. Fielding a competitive team will be easier with increased numbers, and Lunsford expects them to do exactly that this season.
