Inside the Slicers
Last season: 1-9
Returning starters: 13 (7 offense, 6 defense)
Returning offensive leader
Mike Ash, Sr., QB/WR
Returning defensive leader
John Shuble, Sr., DB
John Shuble, Sr., DB. Shuble brings plenty of experience to a defense that started to come into its own at the end of last season. A three-year starter, Shuble is becoming a coach on the field. "John has the experience that we need out there," coach Bob Schellinger said. "He helps set the tone for the rest of the defense."
He's got next
Charles Salary, Jr., RB. Salary is one of 24 juniors on the roster and all are ready to make their mark on the varsity squad. The 5-foot-6 running back has shined through the early stages of camp and carries big expectations into the backfield. "We're going to need a whole lot out of Charles this season," Schellinger said. "We think he can handle it."
The Times' breakdown
LaPorte may have been 1-9 last season, but the Slicers certainly aren't carrying themselves like a one-win football team. A large junior class represents a bulk of the football team while an up-and-coming sophomore group is coming off a 6-3 season at the freshmen level. Sophomore quarterbacks Eric Mazany and Brandon Sickmiller will battle for the starting spot while former signal caller Mike Ash slides over to receiver. Schellinger has "guarded optimism" with his youthful squad, but expects a big improvement from a defense that is headlined by Shuble, junior defensive lineman Aeryk Human and senior linebacker Drew Kessler. — Paul Oren
