Lew Wallace Hornets
Inside the Hornets
Last season: 2-6
Returning starters: 8 (4 offense, 4 defense)
Returning offensive leader
Darius Mahome, Sr., QB/WR (624 receiving yards).
Returning defensive leader
Darius Mahome, Sr., FS (7 INTs).
Darius Mahome, Sr., QB/WR/CB. The unquestioned leader of the Hornets on both sides of the ball, Mahome will be counted on to provide big plays on both sides of the ball. "He's a pretty smart football player with great speed," coach Al Williams said. "He should be able to make things happen when we put the ball in his hands. He's a pretty good passer."
He's got next
Larry Lee, RB/SS. A newcomer to the team this season, Lee possesses blazing speed on both sides of the ball, and the Hornets expect big contributions. "He's a good athlete, period," Williams said. "We're expecting big things out of him in the backfield."
The Times' breakdown
Numbers are very thin in Glen Park this season, and the Hornets lost a lot of seniors. However, Wallace doesn't lack in athleticism. Chief among those is Mahome, a track star who won the 400-meter dash at last season's Crown Point track sectional. Mahome will play quarterback this season after lining up as a wide receiver and running back last year. Demitrius Logger, Carey Moore and Charles Buie return to anchor an offensive line that will be one of the strongest aspects of the team. They'll strive to open up holes for the backfield tandem of Mahome and newcomer Larry Lee. "We should have a decent offensive line," Williams said. "It's going to a rebuilding year, a tough year for us, but we're going to work through it."
