Derren Payne, Sr., QB. "His effort is never lacking. He's got a strong arm and his knowledge of the game is growing," coach Ronald White said.
He's got next
Randall Felix, Jr., FB/LB. "He's determined. He's got a nose for the ball," White said. "He can bench almost 400 pounds and has got power right down the middle; just keeps on truckin'.''
The Times' breakdown
Ronald White is the Panthers' fourth head coach since 2008 and will try to resurrect a program that is 7-35 over the last five seasons. White and his staff, which includes former Bowman skipper Robert Gross, plan to be run-oriented and Felix is a good place to start. Payne may alternate with Xzavier Smith at QB and they'll have a nice target in 6-foot-6 WR Joshua Falls. Linemen Donnell Manson (6-6, 290) and Naeshun Sanders (6-4, 255) will be tough to block. "We want to turn the program around. We've got the right coaches, the right staff," White said. "We want to get more people outside the program involved. Put some Ws on the board and people will be more determined (to come)." Numbers continue to be a concern, though, as well as the kicking game and overall depth.
