(Last week's rankings in parentheses; NR -- not ranked)
1. Andrean (1) 7-0
Does anyone remember when the Griffith-Andrean game was big? Yes. I see that hand. What used to be a game that marked the regular season is now one that might need some paramedics.
2. Merrillville (2) 6-1
Drum roll. The DAC championship game. The trip down U.S. 30 to Lake Central tonight is big, but it isn't the biggest of 2013. It is a lock these two will play for a 6A sectional championship in a month.
3. Lake Central (3) 6-1
As big as this game is for the Bucs, it's bigger for the Indians. They haven't beaten Merrillville in Brett St. Germain's tenure. L.C. must score some points, and the defense must be just as stingy as ever before.
4. Munster (4) 5-2
So look who's on a roll. The Mustangs have won three straight and are playing good football, with Lowell coming to town. This should be a classic slug fest. Power vs. power. Strength vs. strength. Me vs. you.
5. Rensselaer (5) 6-1
If ever you need a big win after a tough loss, play Delphi. Now, a trip to Lafayette Central Catholic, which has won the last four Class A state titles. Will Bomber Nation need to play Delphi after this one?
6. Lowell (6) 5-2
And speaking of a team on a streak, the Red Devils have won five straight. George Fields and his offensive line have been tearing it up of late. Will face a big, red brick wall tonight in Munster. Must go through.
7. Morton (8) 6-1
The Governors are still breathing heavily after last week's 63-56 win over West Side. Oxygen, anyone? Will host struggling Hobart tonight. There is only one question here. Who will be gasping for air around 9 p.m.?
8. Whiting (8) 7-0
The Oilers might get some grub at the Red Rooster tonight on their way to River Forest. They'll probably be having Cream of Ingot soup. It's good with crackers and a cup of milk. Banana Cream pie for dessert.
9. Portage (10) 4-3
Big Red is rollin'. All's good in Wally's World as the Indians try to win four in a row for the first time in five years. Portage has lost eight straight to Valpo going back to 2007. Think it wants this one? Yeah, a little bit.
10. Crown Point (NR) 4-3
The Jekyll and Hyde Bulldogs have a test in Chesterton tonight. The C.P. D has only given up three points in two games. After getting shut down by the top-tier DAC teams, the offense is improving. Cha ching.
On the bubble: Bishop Noll 4-3, Boone Grove 6-1, Chesterton 3-4, E.C. Central 5-2, Highland 4-3, Hobart 4-3, Kankakee Valley 3-4, River Forest 4-3, West Side 3-4, Wheeler 3-4.
