WHITING | Whiting head coach Jeff Cain could chuckle a little bit about his team getting “smacked in the face” in the first quarter of the sectional opener against South Central on Friday night.
That’s easier to do when your team wins 33-12.
“We got smacked in the face and I thought the kids responded well,” he said. “Then (the Satellites) smacked us in the face again, and our kids responded again.”
South Central got things off to a wild start when special teamer Isaiah Thomas took the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown to put the Satellites ahead 6-0.
Times No. 5 Whiting followed with a 64-yard touchdown run by Ethan Young on their second play from scrimmage. Not to be outdone, the Satellites came right back and scored on a 69-yard run by junior quarterback Kyle Sturdy on their first play of the game from scrimmage.
When it was all said and done, South Central was leading 12-6 just a minute and a half into the game.
But the Satellites would not score again, and Whiting would continue to put points on the board behind a strong night from their running game.
Whiting went ahead 13-12 on a 4-yard run by Young with 4:20 left in the first quarter, the Oilers would never look back.
Young ended up with 206 rushing (168 of which came in the first half) and three touchdowns (all of which came in the first half).
Whiting senior Justin Jendreas also had a solid game out of the backfield, rushing for 93 yards and score. He also snatched two drive-killing interceptions in the game.
“Ethan had a great night,” Cain said. “(Jendreas) ran the hard when he got his opportunities also. I thought our line did a good job blocking and our receivers did a great job blocking on the outside.”
Whiting (10-0) could have revenge on its mind when it faces West Central in the sectional semifinals. The Trojans beat the Oilers 39-7 in the sectional opener last year.
