WHITING | The Times No. 5 Whiting Oilers can officially call themselves Greater South Shore Conference champs after cruising to a 33-8 win over Lake Station Friday.

The win also clinched an undefeated regular-season campaign for Whiting (9-0, 7-0) -- its first since 2005.

"It feels great (to go undefeated). That's all we've been talking about for the entire year," quarterback A.J. Veloz said. "We knew that if we played our game, we could just go through everybody, and that's what we've been doing. And hopefully we'll be keeping that going."

The Oilers were methodical in their first few drives. Veloz connected on four of five passes -- all slants or quick passes to the flat but perfectly placed. The team eventually scored on a 9-yard scamper during the first Whiting possession.

Veloz said he spotted something in the Eagle defense that led to the first touchdown.

"I told (coaches) that the bask-side boot was open," he said. "They trusted me with it, and I got it in I guess."

The point after was botched, and the lead was 6-0.

Veloz didn't slow down much from there. The junior was 12 of 17 for 129 yards in the first half.

The next Oilers' scores came via a Noe Torres three-yard run and a 20-yard pass from Veloz to Rudy Wanek that capped an impressive 63-yard, 1:18 drive, giving Whiting a 19-0 lead at the break.

"We've been waiting to run (the two-minute drill)," Cain said. "The situation arose, and I thought we did pretty well. 1:20 for us, that's an eternity."

Torres scored his second touchdown on his second carry, another three-yard plunge in the third quarter. The senior running back scored again on a 20-yard run with 1:15 left in the game.

"I have a lot of confidence in my teammates," Veloz said. "I just get them the ball. They do all the big plays with it."

Lake Station (2-8, 2-5) got it's only touchdown on an eight-yard pass from Kody Lemley to Kyle Gooch with less than three minutes on the clock.
