Marian Catholic diver Joey Cifelli had a strong performance at Friday's IHSA State Swimming Preliminaries at New Trier, posting a score of 324.65 to finish in second place and qualify for today's finals in hopes of capturing a state title.
The other local swimmer was Homewood-Flossmoor's Kevin Kuchta, who finished 38th in the 200-yard individual medley (2:02.34) and 44th in the 100 breast (1:00.77), missing the qualifying cut in both events.
Boys basketball
Bloom Township 64, Kankakee 43: Johnny Griffin and Dejahown Freeman each led the Blazing Trojans (23-3, 9-1) with 15 points, helping the team to a repeat as Southland Athletic Conference champions.
Jared Johnson and Nhyree Mitchell added eight points each for Bloom, which won its 13th straight game.
T.F. South 50, Bremen 39: Kenny Doss led the Rebels (11-13, 7-6) with 14 points in the South Suburban Blue win.
Illya Galloway added 13 points and seven rebounds, while Donald Stone chipped in 10 for T.F. South.
Thornwood 62, Thornton 52: Donte Thomas led the Thunderbirds with 28 points to help his team defeat the rival Wildcats in a SouthWest Suburban Red game.
Rashaad Alexander added 11 points for Thornwood, which outscored the Wildcats (13-11, 11-3) 41-20 in the second half.
Justin Taylor led Thornton with 19 points.
