After two days of postponements and cancellations, the West Side football team celebrated seven players who signed to attend college next season.

Charles Butler will head to Kentucky Christian; Lonnie Johnson signed with Western Michigan; Jon'Vae Johnson heads to Toledo; Avery Nash will go to DePauw; Marcus Carter and Anthony Cherry will play at Kentucky Christian, and JaQuan Ross will play at Hutchinson Junior College.

The Cougars sent their letters of intent Wednesday, the opening of the signing period, and were originally scheduled to host a news conference and celebration then. School cancellations and delays postponed those plans.

Notes and news

Prep stars vie at Campagna: Midwest Elite Prep will host St. John's Military of Wisconsin at 6 p.m. today at Campagna Academy, located at 7403 Cline Ave. in Schererville.

The two teams have split the season series at one game each. Both feature multiple Division I recruits, including former Michigan City High School standout Ryan Taylor.

Portage runner picks IUPUI: Portage senior Paige Pizer has signed a national letter of intent to run for IUPUI.

"Since I started running, it was always a goal, something I wanted to do in college," Pizer said. "I went there when my cousin was a freshman, and I really liked the school. When I found out they had a team, it made me more interested. I took my visit, and I just loved it there."

Pizer is just one of two Indians to run in four state cross country meets. She also qualified for the state track finals in the 800 and 3,200 relay last year. If she makes it this season, the six state finals appearances would be a school record.

"They have a really strong team," Pizer said of IUPUI. "I'll just go out and do my best and fit in where I fit in."

Pizer will major in nursing.
