CROWN POINT | Katie Pawlowski practices shooting 3-pointers when she's at an open gym or getting in some work at the YMCA.
That offseason effort showed as the sophomore guard scored 28 points — including six 3-pointers — to lead Crown Point to a 68-28 win over Hanover Central.
"It was just falling tonight,' Pawlowski said. "Every player has the green light and all we want to do is keep shooting."
Abby Kvachkoff hit five from beyond the 3-point arc, also.
"We are dedicating more time during practice to shoot the ball," Bulldogs coach Anne Equihua said. "We say 'Hey, if you're close, step back behind the line and get an extra point out of it.'"
A dark cloud hovered over the win, though. Senior Katija Tarailo fell to the hardwood gripping her knee seconds after the opening tip. The Crown Point gym went silent and Tarailo had to be helped back to the locker room.
"I about threw up," Equihua said. "That was our point. Do it for Kat."
C.P. (3-0) shot 6-9 from the 3-point line in the first half. Kvachkoff hit four 3-pointers, herself, in the first 16 minutes.
The Bulldogs held a 41-10 lead at halftime.
"We have the majority of the same players (as last season), except they have a year experience under their belt," Equihua said. "That's always very helpful."
The Wildcats (2-2) shot only 9 of 35 from the free throw line, negating the huge advantage they had in trips to the charity stripe. Crown Point was 5-6.
Kvachkoff finished with 15 points. Frankie Turturillo and Brooke Sterkowicz each scored eight for Hanover Central.
