Bowman Academy Eagles
Last season: 19-7, lost in Class 2A Rochester Regional final to FW Luers
Inside the Eagles
Leading returning scorer: Joshlynn King, 9.8 ppg.
Leading returning rebounder: Joshlynn King, 6.0 rpg.
Star power: Joshlynn King, So., C. With the graduation or transfer of four of the five starters from last year's team, King will be counted on to take a new role. "We haven't really deemed a star. There will be a lot of players that we can go to," coach Janora Holmes said. "Some people may think this season will be the Joshlynn King Show, but we have a lot of versatility."
Newcomer to watch: Ronikka McCormick, Fr., G; Diamond Harvey, Fr., G. The pair have speed and agility to spare. Adapting to the faster pace of the varsity game will be the first big hurdle, but when they reach the other side, they'll be among the best to watch at Bowman.
Breakdown
Eagles reloading not rebuilding
The Eagles lost the bulk of their scoring last year to graduation, and another to transfer. This hasn't diminished Bowman's goals. "We expect to make it to state," sophomore Joshlynn King said. "We have everything we need to get there. We just have to do it." The Eagles remain athletic and agile. They've found a plethora of guards to replace the losses of Princess German, Rashawnda Dunlap and DeJah Joshua. "For the first time, we have what we haven't had in the past, and that's true guards," coach Janora Holmes said. "There's an opportunity there for us to play together and emphasize other players." To end the 2011-12 season, Bowman Academy lost for the second time in a row in the regional final. "We've learned that one person cannot do it alone," Holmes said. "We put a lot of pressure, in hindsight, on Princess, and I think it took away from the expectations of the other girls at times. I think they depended on her, not realizing they have their own inner strengths. This year they're actually seeing it, that in a different setting, 'I can actually do things I've practiced in a game.' Definitely it's not a one-man game for sure." !~ Hillary Smith
