Covenant Christian Knights
Last year: 13-9, lost in Class A Sectional semifinal to Kouts
Inside the Knights
Leading returning scorer: Rachel Schurman and Jennifer Heerema, 7.0 ppg
Leading returning rebounder: Katy Long, 9.0 rpg
Star power: Katy Long, Sr., F/C. Long is the Knights go-to player and will be one the team can look for when it needs a basket in crunch time.
Newcomer to watch: Calli Beezhold, Jr., F/C. Although Beezhold saw a lot of varsity minutes last year, she has improved a lot since practice began this fall and has gotten better on both ends of the floor.
Knights have bright future with new coach
New coach Doug Robertson, who was head coach for five seasons at Bishop Noll, has a solid nucleus to work with, including three starters from a 13-9 squad. “The seven that we’ve got returning, each one of them on a different night was the leading scorer last year,” Robertson said. “They’re all capable of big things every night.” Senior forward Katy Long, a fourth-year varsity player, gives the Knights experience and leadership as well as skill in the front court. “You’ve got think that we’re going to look at her,” Robertson said. “You need a basket late in the game you’re going to get the ball down to a post player.” The Knights have a lot of size for a Class A team and should give teams on their schedule fits in the paint. “We’re pulling it together pretty well, especially for the first week of practice,” Long said. “I’m really excited to see what the season has in store. “We definitely have strength in height. We have two girls who are over 6-feet tall and a couple that are just under, so that really gives us an advantage on the block, obviously. We have some real good ball handlers, too that helps as well.” !~ Christopher Breach
