Lake Central Indians
Last season: 13-11, 6-8 DAC, lost in regional semifinal to Chesterton.
Inside the Indians
Leading returning scorer: Nikki Adams 10.1 ppg.
Leading returning rebounder: Jessica Bell 7.1 rpg.
Newcomer to watch: Lizzie Seymour, So. PG. While she played huge minutes in L.C.'s postseason run, the ultra-athletic point guard will need to continue rising for the team to follow. Seymour can shoot, pass and take it to the rack and finish. More of the same is needed for another solid winter.
Breakdown
Nothing unlucky about 13
It took 13 years for L.C. to win a sectional again. That's the good news. But letting a 17-point second-quarter lead against Chesterton slip away in the regional semifinal left a sour taste in the team's mouth. "It was a good thing that we broke that curse," L.C. senior guard Angela Perez said. "That was something we'll remember for awhile." The Indians lost Carolyn Sandrick (Purdue Calumet) and Isis Thomas (IPFW) to graduation. Replacing Sandrick's 16 points a game will not be easy. "We're going to need to find someone to fill her shoes," L.C. coach Leslie Iwema said. "Hopefully, we'll be able to divide it around the team some." Nikki Adams and Jessica Bell are two very strong post players. Lizzie Seymour is one of the area's top point guards. Some of the pieces are in place. It may take some time for the younger players to hit varsity speed. "I feel good about the chemsitry and excitement level," Iwema said. "These girls want to be successful. When we talk about the regional, the girls get upset. We were right there. They want to see if they can take it a little further this year." !~ Steve Hanlon
