Lowell Red Devils
Last season: 18-4, 6-0 NCC. Lost 66-40 in the Class 4A sectional semifinal to Lake Central.
Inside the Red Devils
Leading returning scorer: Katie Bobos, 14.7 ppg
Leading returning rebounder: Bobos, 9 rpg; Mackenzie Kreutz 9 rpg
Star power: Katie Bobos. The four-year standout is getting a lot of college attention, including from Florida Gulf Coast. The new coaching staff is hoping to use her on the wing more than in the past.
Newcomer to watch: Kalyne Godbolt. The shifty, tough point guard can really "drop some dimes," as first-year coach Matt Welsh said. A terrific passer with great court awareness will look to score more this winter.
Breakdown
One last time for the Super Class
Welsh, a former Crown Point assistant, returns to the region hoping to get his loaded senior class over the top. With 18 wins and the NCC title last year, all the good was lost when Lake Central pounded the Devils in the sectional. Bobos and Kreutz are the "Big Two," but Welsh knows the other three starters will also have to raise their game. "I would rather have an average regular season and win a sectional than what we did last year," Welsh said. "Having that picture on the wall is the most important thing. There are a lot of expectations with this senior class. We've got enough to compete for the sectional." The new coach knows the cupboard isn't bare beyond his seniors. His underclassmen have talent, height and athleticism. These girls will play a big part in working to take the program to the top. !~ Steve Hanlon
