HOBART | The predominant color may have been pink at Hobart's annual Coaches vs. Cancer game, but the Brickies were seeing orange throughout the night.

Hobart, dressed in all pink uniforms, used its suffocating defensive presence in its 40-28 nonconference win against Chesterton on Tuesday.

The Times No. 7 Brickies forced 17 total turnovers in the ballgame and defended several other passes, making the Trojans, wearing white jerseys with pink numbers, play their game by slowing the pace down.

"This team has versatility and can get after people," said Hobart coach Mike Hamacher, who dyed his hear pink along with the other coaches. "The length, depth, and quickness we have lets us do a variety of things and do things that fit our personality."

The entire first half was marred by turnovers, as both teams combined for 18 points.

Neither team could get a run going because of the swarming defensive effort on both sides, which played right into the Hobart style as the host Brickies went into the half nursing a 19-15 lead.

"I was mad at myself in the beginning of the game, but I let it go," said Hobart leading scorer Grayce Roach, who had 13.

Chesterton's season-leading scorer, Caroline Puntillo, was held to 2-of-6 shooting in the first half, pacing the Trojans (4-9) along with Sarah Richards. They had six points apiece.

Hobart (13-4) distanced itself a bit thanks to Roach scoring seven of the Brickies' 13 points in the third quarter. She converted on all three shots she took.

"She's our emotional leader on and off the floor," Hamacher said. "She's matured and has come back from a bad quarter or a half."

Puntillo finished with game-highs of 14 points and seven rebounds.

The Coaches vs. Cancer game goal was to raise $2000 and awareness about the disease in general. The school gave away door prizes and played various games throughout the night.

"We've raised money here and there for a couple years, but Diane Glidewell, a player from 2005, has done a great job pulling people together and it was a great combined effort from both teams because Chesterton donated hundreds of dollars as well," Hamacher said.
