CHESTERTON | Lake Central knew what to expect from Chesterton on Friday night. It was senior night for the Trojans, and the Indians knew it would be an emotional game. But that didn't stop the Indians from pulling out a 45-39 victory.
"We talked about that before the game started," Lake Central coach Leslie Iwema said. "Expect a lot of emotion, especially in the beginning. We had our senior night two games ago, and we know what it's like to ride that kind of emotion, and not let them get anything going too easy, stay up in the passing lane and put pressure as much as we could from the very beginning."
The Trojans came out strong, taking an early 7-2 lead, but the Indians were able to slowly chip away at the lead and tie the game at 11-11 at the end of the first quarter. Chesterton went on a 5-0 run to start the second, but Lake Central responded and went on a 5-0 run of their own after a Jessica Bell layup tied the game at 16-16.
Nikki Adams then sank two free throws to give the Indians their first lead of the night, a lead that they wouldn't give up for the rest of the game.
"We got off to a slow start, but we then started to pull away," Adams said. Adams had a game high 18 points, with five rebounds and one steal. "We knew that we wouldn't give that lead up."
Lake Central took a 25-20 lead into halftime. Lake Central led 28-24 in the third quarter, and after two layups by Adams, the Indians found themselves with an eight point advantage.
"The girls did a good job at getting it inside, we've been working on it all week. I was trying to go up strong every time, and take it to the hole," Adams said, who scored 10 of her 18 points in the second half.
"Nikki did a good job with the basketball, she was active and she was doing a good job demanding the ball," Iwema said.
The Indians held on to a 32-26 lead at end of the third quarter, and kept the Trojans scoreless in the fourth until 3:45 remained. Chesterton's Lindsay Gorman fouled out with 3:18 left in the game, and ended the night with four points. Three other Chesterton players had four fouls on the night.
"I was really happy with our defense," Iwema said. "I thought we did a good job trying to contain (Lindsay) Gorman as much as we could, we have a lot of respect for her as a player. Our kids knew whoever had the task of guarding her would have to help. I had four girls guarding her, and it was a team effort to stop her and the whole team."
Chesterton shot 50 percent from the floor and was 2-of-14 from the three point line.
"(It was) Just a poor shooting night," Chesterton coach Jack Campbell said. "We had good shots that we didn't make by some of our better shooters. We gave up some easy ones. "
Annette Frank led the Trojans (8-10, 4-9) with 10 points, and Sarah Richards added eight.
Jessica Bell added 10 points and four rebounds for Lake Central (10-9, 6-7).
