WHITING | The Class 2A Whiting Sectional is proving to have some high-flying teams that will be a tough out later in the tournament.

After Bishop Noll hung 62 on Hebron on Tuesday night, Bowman Academy (8-12) blew past Lake Station 78-55 in the first game of Wednesday night's doubleheader.

Junior center Joshlynn King scored 26 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and had six steals in the win, as she scored 18 at the half, going 9-of-11 from the floor.

She also started hot early, hitting all six of her shots in the first quarter on her way to 12 of Bowman's 27 first-quarter points.

Lake Station (11-10) committed 27 turnovers against 30 points at the half, scoring 15 in each quarter.

The game was marred by turnovers for both teams, however, as Bowman had 27.

"All season that's been our weakness, rushing the ball up the floor and not working the clock to our advantage," Bowman coach Janora Holmes said. "We tried to hone in on the girls' athleticism."

Lake Station amassed 50 turnovers on the night.

Lake Station senior guard Joanna Dwyer netted 21 points, while junior center Ashlinn Jorgensen chipped in 20 and five boards.

"We played sporadically in the beginning and had the mindset that they were better than us," Lake Station coach Kristy Hite said. "Ashlinn played timid at first, but she developed a rhythm, and Joanna, as well as everyone else, gave it their all."

In the second game, it was the Citlali Lopez show for Whiting (12-8) as she carried the Oilers to a 63-42 victory over River Forest.

Lopez scored 20 points in the first half on her way to a game-high 34, while adding 11 steals and five assists.

Whiting was coasting 36-21 at the half, but the Ingots (9-12) erased that lead with a 17-2 run in the third quarter. However, over the last 2:40, the Oilers scored the last nine points of the quarter.

Whiting freshman guard Courtney Blackwell added 10 points, and senior guard Bri Blackwell chipped in nine.

River Forest, behind sophomore forward Colleen Cary's team-high 15, got the lead down to 47-40, but Whiting outscored the Ingots 16-2 over the last 6:38.
